When you hear the term “group exercise,” thoughts of Jane Fonda, leotards and complicated dance routines likely come to mind. Once considered a ‘ladies-only’ club, group exercise classes are now as varied and diverse as the options at the local ice cream shop. There is something for everyone. And joining a group exercise class may be just the thing you need to spark, or reignite, your interest in fitness. Whether you want to lose fat, build muscle or blow off steam, here are the top five reasons for getting into the group:
Unless you’re working with a personal trainer, chances are your past-its-prime workout is due for an upgrade. A stale workout breeds boredom. Boredom breeds excuses for skipping your workout. The group exercise schedule offers plenty of variety to challenge your body and your mind, which is essential for keeping boredom at bay . . . and keeping you fit.
Change is necessary for growth. Period. Your body will never change if you exercise the same way each time you head to the gym. Shake up your routine and try out a new class. The change in stimulus will give your body the shock it needs to overcome an exercise plateau.
Staying in the gym long enough to get a good workout can sometimes be a greater challenge than the workout itself. The right group exercise class can help prevent a too-early gym exit. Even if you’re not giving it your all, chances are you’ll muster enough resolve to participate until class ends. You might also make a friend or two which builds camaraderie and extra accountability.
Recent studies suggest that intensity is an important component of body composition improvement. The group exercise environment is the perfect place to pick up your pace and reap the rewards. Whether due to a little friendly competition or the energy of the group, experts state that people push harder when exercising in a group.
Exercising alone can be uninspiring. But exercising among others who are working toward a similar goal can be uplifting and even fun! Most people spend all day doing something they don’t enjoy. Exercise should not be one of those things. Participate in a class that makes you smile and you’re likely to return week after week.
