Member: Richard Ensminger

Richard Ensminger is 84, he is one of our most loyal Members and he checks in just about every day and he has been a member since 2007.

You check into the gym just about every day of the week. Most people check in around 2-5 days a week. What is your secret that allows you to exercise almost every day?
I’m afraid of what will happen if I stop and it’s something to do.

Like our previous Member of the Month you are an avid pool user too. We noticed that you stuck it out after the pool closed and used the free weights and machines upstairs. Did you feel that all of the equipment and what you came up with for a routine was a good substitute?
I always went to the poll in La Jolla as an addition to my routine upstairs here.

You were an avid pool user, checking in almost every day to swim laps. When the pool closed down, did you find any way to replace your routine?
Yes, but without swimming. I also belong to another gym which has a small pool at its Kearney Mesa location, but it was an unacceptable substitute for the Plunge and much farther away from my residence.

If so, please explain the routine you chose to do and why?
I live about 3 miles north of the Wavehouse and my routine was to walk to Belmont Park do my swim and walk back to my home. I feel this provides a balance exercise for both my upper and lower body. I continued to walk the beach and would stop in the Wave House to see if any progress was being made on getting the pool open. The staff were always friendly and informative and allowed me to refill my water bottle even though my membership was on freeze.

How often do you workout at Wavehouse Athletic Club?
It’s about a 10 mile drive here for me so it depends on the price of gas...
- Before $4/gallon of gas, 6-7 days a week.
- After $4/gallon of gas, only 3-4 days a week

You always check in during the morning when we open up. Do you always prefer to work out in the morning?
Yes, since the pool closed I have become an early morning member because it’s like having my own personal gym.

What is your favorite thing about wave house athletic club?
A list of non-favorite things is shorter. Nothing! Meaning I like everything about it. And that includes the front desk people like Scott and Mike, and when I swam it included all the life guards. And a special thanks to Tyler and Courtney.

What do you do when you work out? Cardio, free weights, or a combination of both?
What is a free weight? Does that include the machines? I have my own routine but I don’t really have a name for it, I just get in here and do it! I also love to walk in from the cold parking lot into that great sauna. Thanks for having that thing on at 6 am!

How did you both get so involved with working out and getting into great shape? We received free passes for 7 days from a member that works at north shore cafe at Wavehouse

Did you all face any sort of challenges when sticking to a routine?
Eating healthier and budgeting time between work

What is the #1 thing you like most about being into fitness?
We love the way we feel!

What is a typical day for you guys, fitness wise? Do you have a basic routine?
A mix of cardio and weight training

Member: Susan Norman

All of us at the Wave House Athletic club would like to congratulate our very own Susan Norman. Given her recent successes at the Las Vegas half-Ironman and then again at the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii Susan hardly needs an introduction, but for those of us who don’t take Spin class or read newspapers, here is why we chose Susan Norman as our Member of the Month.

What inspires you to stay healthy?
My younger brother was diagnosed with Leukemia 15 years ago and has since become healthy. I have done many charity events for him and other Make-A-Wish kids like him over the years.

How often do you workout at WHAC on a weekly basis?
I work out at WHAC four to five times a week

What do you think separates WHAC from other gyms?
The gym etiquette that people have here is great! Also the location is amazing I love working out at the beach!

Why did you join Wave House?
I love working out at the beach!

What is your typical workout?
To stay well rounded, I spend about 50% of my time upstairs lifting and doing cardio and 50% downstairs jumping rope and punching the bags.
